Therapeutic ultrasound is a gentle, evidence-based treatment that helps relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation in the breast. It’s part of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine’s updated protocol for treating conditions on the mastitis spectrum including engorgement, clogged ducts, inflammatory mastitis, and bacterial mastitis.

This treatment uses sound waves to create soft, soothing vibrations in the breast tissue. These vibrations help reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and ease swelling, allowing milk to flow more freely and helping you feel better faster.

We recommend starting treatment as soon as you notice symptoms such as pain, redness, swelling, or firm lumps in the breast. Even if your symptoms have progressed to bacterial mastitis, therapeutic ultrasound can still help, especially when used alongside care from your provider, such as antibiotics.

Find Relief and Heal with Therapeutic Ultrasound

Pain is one of the most common reasons parents stop breastfeeding earlier than they hoped. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Therapeutic ultrasound is a gentle, evidence-based treatment that helps relieve pain and inflammation so you can heal and continue feeding your baby the way you planned.

This therapy uses ultrasound waves to create soft, soothing vibrations in the breast tissue. These vibrations help reduce swelling, improve milk flow, and relieve inflammation deep in the breast, which is often the root cause of recurring symptoms like clogged ducts, pain, or mastitis. Unlike many quick fixes you might see online, therapeutic ultrasound targets the underlying problem, not just the surface symptoms, helping to prevent future flare-ups.

Therapeutic ultrasound is included in the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine’s updated clinical protocol for treating all conditions on the mastitis spectrum, including engorgement, clogged ducts, inflammatory mastitis, and bacterial mastitis. It’s safe, noninvasive, and research-backed, giving you real relief you can trust.

We know how important timing is when you’re in pain, which is why we offer same-day appointments, often with no wait time, even on weekends. Depending on your location, we may also be able to provide in-home treatment, bringing expert care and comfort directly to you.

There’s a lot of mixed and often inaccurate information online about how to manage breast inflammation. You deserve something that’s clear, effective, and based on evidence and therapeutic ultrasound is exactly that.

You don’t have to wait or wonder if it’ll get better on its own. Relief is available today, so you can get back to feeling like yourself and continue your breastfeeding journey with confidence.

You’re a busy mom and you need to Feel better faster.

The number of therapeutic ultrasound sessions needed to prevent a clogged duct from progressing to mastitis can vary, but most cases respond well to one to three sessions. If treatment begins early, at the first signs of discomfort or a blockage, one session may be enough to relieve symptoms. For more stubborn or moderate cases, two to three sessions on consecutive days are often recommended. Timing is key; the sooner ultrasound therapy is applied, the more effective it tends to be. This treatment is typically part of a broader approach that may include ice, over the counter anti-inflammatory medications, gentle lymphatic breast massage, and specialized Kinesio taping of the breast. Our IBCLC's will also address any underlying latch or feeding issues and effective pumping & proper flange fitting.

Non-Invasive and Comfortable

Reduces Pain and Inflammation

Ultrasound helps decrease swelling and discomfort by increasing circulation and using thermal energy to calm inflamed tissue, offering effective relief from pain and pressure.

Loosens Blockages

The deep, targeted sound waves help break up thickened milk and reduce ductal blockages, promoting easier milk flow and preventing the progression to more serious infections.
