What is the SOS approach?

  • A holistic approach to feeding that thinks about the child’s whole body and integrates sensory, motor, learning and nutritional factors into feeding

  • Focuses on increasing a child’s comfort level by focusing on learning and exploring the different properties of food

  • A play based approach to help kids learn to eat by progressing through 32 small steps and 6 main steps

Picky Eater

  • Generally eats at least 30 different foods

  • Generally eat foods after a 2 week break from it

  • Able to tolerate new foods on their plate

  • Eat at least 1 food from most textures or nutritional groups

  • Eat different foods from the rest of the family, but with the family

  • Happening for less than 2 years

Problem Feeder

  • Eats less than 20 foods

  • Will rarely accept a food again after having a food jag

  • Often protest, cry, or “fall apart” when presented with new foods

  • Refuse entire categories of textures or nutritional groups

  • Eat different foods and at a different time or location as the rest of the family

  • Happening for over 2 years
